Requirements
This digital art mentorship is designed to take your skills to the next level with professional studio-style experience. To ensure that you get the most out of your mentorship, we accept intermediate to advanced-level artists only. To apply for a mentorship, you should have a solid grasp of art fundamentals and confidence with your software of choice.
Lessons and details
Week 3
In your first session, you’ll meet with your mentor and establish your illustration goals. The task for this week is gathering references, organizing mood and reference boards, and sketching out the subject of your piece. Your mentor will also review your portfolio with you.
Week 3
In week two, you’ll enter the sketching phase. Here you’ll explore composition and framing, and discuss how you can approach your sketch. The task for this week is to produce three rough sketches that will form the basis of your final illustration.
Week 3
After reviewing and refining your rough sketches, week three will focus on your rough color options. Your mentor will discuss the use of color and light in greater detail. The task for the week will be to provide three rough color options for your illustration.
Week 3
In week four, you’ll choose a final color option with your mentor and move on to rendering. You’ll explore the art of balancing the scale of details, and how to approach rendering efficiently within a deadline. The task for the week is to take your chosen color scheme and push it to the final stages.
Week 3
Week five will focus on polishing your final illustration and file prep. The task for this week is to apply any feedback and start adding a final polish. You will also be cleaning up the file to the industry standard.
Week 3
Week six continues the content covered in week five, dedicated to any final feedback from your mentor and the polishing of your masterpiece. This will be your final opportunity to ask any questions about your work and feedback, so come prepared!
Week 3
In week seven we say our final farewells in a group call and reflect on our mentorship journey. You’ll now have a finished illustration that you can proudly add to your portfolio, in addition to a deeper understanding of professional studio practices. Now, you're ready for your next adventure!



Meet your mentor
Rin Shapovalova (@rin.woodhead) is an Art Director at Mooncolony with over 14 years of experience working in the games industry. As the studio’s first ever full-time artist, Rin has played a pivotal role in Mooncolony’s evolution. After transitioning from concept art to illustration, she became a Lead Artist on Hearthstone, before taking on the role of Art Director. Rin has extensive experience in stylized art, and has created cinematics, card art, concept art and more for some of the world’s leading games companies. As a self-taught artist, Rin loves nothing more than sharing her skills with the next generation—and seeing her mentees get their first studio jobs!
