Learn the Secrets of Cinematic Illustrations
Do you want to make illustrations that tell a story? The kind that feels like stepping into a movie? You need to level up your visual storytelling.
In this two-day workshop, Mooncolony Lead Artist Gabriel Rubio will show you how to start telling powerful narratives in your art. You’ll access the composition methods, cinematic techniques, and other tricks that Gabriel uses to pull viewers in.
During this live online class, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, receive guidance, and even get a paintover of your art (seats are limited!). Get the artistic process of a top games artist, and start making your illustrations stand out to recruiters 💪

Workshop Structure
Timings
- The workshop will take place over two days, on July 11th 2025 and July 14th 2025.
- Each day will consist of two 2.5-hour sessions, with a 45-minute break in between.
- The days will run from 2pm-7:45pm GMT. Please ensure you can attend the workshop in your time zone before booking.
Day 1
- Session 1: Gabriel will discuss visual storytelling techniques, and reveal the decision-making process behind his cinematic illustrations. He’ll share in-depth advice on composition, camera positioning, and using movie shots as references.
- 45-minute break
- Session 2: Gabriel will start working on a cinematic story-driven illustration, whilst explaining his process and taking questions.
- Students will receive a thumbnail brief as a homework assignment at the end of the day. Gold Ticket students must complete their thumbnail before Day 2. For Silver Ticket students, the brief is optional.
Day 2
- Session 1: Gabriel will continue working on his cinematic illustration, explaining his lighting and coloring process, and taking questions. He will also demonstrate how to enhance immersion with VFX and post-production tweaks.
- 45-minute break
- Session 2: Gabriel will give feedback and paintovers on the Gold Ticket students’ assignments, whilst taking questions.

How It Works
- Choose between a Gold Ticket or Silver Ticket seat in the workshop (see above), and book a spot—hurry, seats are limited!
- Before each day of the workshop takes place, you’ll receive a private link to enter the virtual classroom.
- During the workshop, you’ll be able to freely ask questions in the chat. A moderator will pass questions to Gabriel whilst he works.
- At the end of Day 1, students will receive a brief to create their illustration thumbnail (optional for Silver Ticket students).
- Gold Ticket students must submit their thumbnail before Day 2. This artwork can be taken as far as you like - but the more polished it is, the more detailed feedback you’ll get.
- In the second session of Day 2, Gabriel will conduct paintovers on the Gold Ticket students’ art. All students can watch and ask questions.
- After each session, all students will receive a link to download the video recording.
Requirements
To attend this workshop, you should have solid drawing skills and a basic grasp of art fundamentals. This workshop will discuss digital art techniques, so an understanding of painting software (such as Photoshop, Procreate, or Clip Studio Paint) is also essential.

Meet your mentor
Gabriel Rubio is one of Mooncolony’s Lead Artists, and an expert in crafting impactful stylized art. At the age of 24, Gabriel left a career in advertising to pursue his love of drawing. Today, he has nearly a decade of experience in games art, working on iconic titles such as Legends of Runeterra, Valorant, Wayfinder, Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, Marvel Rivals, Clash of Clans, and more. As a self-taught artist, Gabriel wants to help demystify the industry and help beginner artists succeed. Gabriel lives in São Paulo, Brazil.
